Today I was a guest at the Human Services Federation where I had a chance to speak briefly with a host of public service agency leaders who provide essential services to our vulnerable friends and neighbors every day! Pictured here with wonderful Barry Gourley, Executive Director of Family Service, a Board of which I am Past Chair.
More Door 2 Door fun! Today I met the Tony Manthey Family Singers complete with a banjo, ukulele and guitar! These darling girls and their grandfather were singing while strolling down the street! I am having such a wildly great adventure in LD 28!
Another wonderful day talking with new friends around the District. Cheery pumpkins, kind husbands planting signs and a loving mother and daughter who live together. The daughter sacrifices much to care for her aging mother. Having had Mom live with us for over 10 years, I know we must do more to help our loved ones stay in their homes as long as possible, and help the family caregivers, as well.
Today's Door 2 Door included conversations with a woman named Rosie who turned 60 today! She and her friends bless our elderly family members and neighbors by caring for them at Tabitha's Green Houses. They called themselves "universal caregivers." Having had my mother live with us for over 10 years, I am highly aware of and grateful for the compassionate care offered by such Angels who are willing to help our aging loved ones. Happy birthday Rosie!
Door 2 Door conversations this past week include:<br />
an amazing fall pansy whisperer, a Santa discussing the export of gambling dollars, a midwife concerned about the educational focus on testing rather than teaching and a state trooper concerned about safety issues for our citizens. This is a privilege to talk to so many fascinating voters!
Kind friends walked for me today! Among the fabulous walkers are my friend Connie Duncan (our next LPS School Board Member!) and Eldonna Rayburn, a new friend whom I met at the LIBA candidate's forum this year! Thank you to all who canvassed!
This week, while going Door 2 Door, I came upon a supportive pastor, a voter with great knowledge about Access Nebraska and 2 wholehearted friends from my LSE Class of 1976! Still enjoying this journey!
The stories at Madonna's Goal Awards Luncheon showed the moving progression from incapacitation to independence to inspiration! The work that Madonna is doing is nothing short of miraculous! Great thanks to Marsha Lommel for her vision! Pictured here with General Counsel Mike Munro and Kim Robak.
Here we are under Willa Cather's "complete dome of heaven" celebrating the undulating prairie, the songbirds at dusk and the Spring Creek Prairie. If you haven't been, it is truly your loss. A beautiful evening juxtaposed with the irreverent humor of Bruce Wright & Sam Seever, also joined by friends Mary Pipher, Michele Casanova and Cindy Morris!
At Lighthouse Big Red Bash Event this weekend supporting longtime friend Peter Allman and his colleagues who work hard every day to change young people's lives. Thank you Lighthouse! You are truly a beacon in our community!
Door 2 Door stories from this week include a felon who has served his time, reshaped his life and is now healing others, a 78-year-old Republican woman who wants to see more women in office and a fabulous woman who pointed to the prediction that the plethora of acorns this fall means a snowy winter...bundle up!
30th Reunion from UNL Law School with Roscoe Pound in his Husker regalia! Top 3 memories: fabulous professors, the ecstasy of Susan B. Anthony skits and the agony of writing my Law Review Article on Initiative 300!
Big day! Our youngest turned 18 and can vote! Avary is a remarkable young woman with a bright future of caring and advocating for others! I love her with all my heart!
At "Lincoln Rise" Mentoring Group tonight with 200 women, founded by Katie Weichman Zulkoski. Picture with my inspiring friend, Tasha Everman, UNL Law Asst. Dean of Career Services!
Many thanks to Senator Jeremy Nordquist and Nicki Behmer for campaigning door to door for me! I am also grateful for his support and leadership on the minimum wage initiative.
Heartfelt thanks to darling friends, Richard Evnen and Kim Heier, for opening their beautiful home for a wonderful, festive event! Chef Brian Everman treated us to his mouthwatering delicacies!
This week I was honored to attend the 90th birthday of my beloved LSE math teacher, DJ (Stevens) Thompson! DJ is still one of the most brilliant, fun and amazing teachers (and people) whom I have known. She is one of the great LPS (& UNL) educators in our midst whom I have considered a role model and mentor since taking and learning math from her in 1973! She is still wholehearted with a quick mind and a wonderful zest for life! Happy 90th to DJ!
I am grateful to be a member of the Board of Partnership for Healthy Lincoln! Yesterday's 4th Annual Streets Alive! Event was our most successful to date! Members of our Board gathered including Sue Quambusch and Ann Harrell Avery! Always love the bike-blended yogurt smoothie sponsored by the Great Plains Trail Network! Important to take time for some healthy fun!
A fabulous Republicans and Independents for Patty Party tonight at Walt and Joy Broer's gorgeous home! I am grateful for the broad support I am receiving! Nebraska business, economy and citizens will thrive on collaboration and communication!
Today was the Grand Opening of the Bryan Independence Center! Thank you to all who made this beautiful building for a critical community need possible! Substance abuse issues are growing and our state and community need to continue to work to provide opportunities for those in need. Thank you to Bryan Health for providing this compassionate service to Lincoln and to the donors for their generosity!
Door 2 Door lessons from this week include discussions with a Forensic Agronomist who engages in CSI for Plants, a former farmer who is caring for 3 family members (including himself) with cancer who talked about always finding "the upside in every situation" and a soil expert who taught "soil conservation is fun!" Amazing people in LD 28!
Tonight CenterPointe had their annual event with Herschel Walker who said that we all struggle with issues and illnesses. Some are physical and familiar, others mental and hidden. It is time we acknowledge the dramatic impact to our society of mental illness and addiction on 1 out of 4 of our friends, neighbors and family. With Rod and Debbie Basler, Walt and Joy Broer
